Australia’s censorship crisis now critical, democracy hangs in the balance.

November 1st, 2008

They haven’t even been creative about it, they’re taking a tactic from a known bastard playbook:

“The state must declare the child to be the most precious treasure of the people. As long as the government is perceived as working for the benefit of the children, the people will happily endure almost any curtailment of liberty and almost any deprivation.”
-Adolf Hitler

I’m sure you’ll find many articles about the Australian government’s proposed forced internet filter for all Australian citizens based on a secret blacklist that nobody will get to see or vote on except those special interest groups who will blackmail the government in order for the government pass key legislation.

Here’s one article outlining the crisis:
http://www.zdnet.com.au/insight/communications/soa/ISP-level-content-filtering-won-t-work/0,139023754,339292158,00.htm

Summary:
The government wants to put an internet filter in to censor 100% of Australians from viewing certain things on the internet. There will be NO opt-out for this filter.

Four main reasons the filtering scheme is totally flawed:

  • Technically it is impossible.
  • Ethically, households should decide what to filter, not the government.
  • It’s not the ISP’s responsibility to stop people breaking the law. Ummm, isn’t that what the police are for?
  • People don’t want it!
  • Another video explaining the issue:

I guess this internet filter is the ultimate test of Australia’s democracy. Seeing as the poll results I’ve seen are around the 80-90% AGAINST censorship on this issue and every person I have talked to is 100% against it, if this censorship measure gets put into law, then we know for a FACT that Australia has lost any form of democracy that it once may have had.

If this filter goes ahead in Australia, we will be the first western country to blanket censor 100% of our citizens from the internet. The only other countries who have put this in place are ones such as China, Iran, Syria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Cuba, North Korea, etc. Does Australia belong in this list? Do you care about your rights?

I say it’s time for our (some might say “inalienable”) rights to be laid out in law in a new Bill of Rights for Australia. The bill of rights we currently have doesn’t appear to be working very well to protect our rights. For all of America’s faults, they seem to have some things right but even their Bill of Rights has been chipped away at over the years. They no longer have Habeas Corpus and many other rights have either been watered down or surgically removed. The world is suffocating, our rights and liberties are the air, being slowly removed to asphyxiate us all.

Are we as Australians going to sit back and let these bastards tell us what is good for us? Politicians and the government were voted in as SERVANTS of WE, THE PEOPLE. We run this country, not them. Realise your civic duty to your country, don’t let these bastards win. So snap out of it Australia and take action.

As Australians, we are in the unique position to defend the democracy and freedom of our country. There are so many people in so many other countries who do not have this same opportunity to defend their country’s liberty.

You can help by contacting your representatives and spreading the word about this campaign.

Contacting the Minister will let him know that his constituents, the Australian public, are not on board with his impractical plan. Call the Minister! There’s nothing like a personal phone call to get the message across.
Call the minister’s office on (03) 9650 1188 and let them know your objections.

I think the world is watching a major turning point in America’s history. The path is either to start on the very very long road to reparations of what’s left of the United States of America or to continue with the total annihilation of that nation by the failure of leadership and the ongoing undermining of core values that Americans, and hopefully the world, hold dear.

America’s destiny is on the razors edge - reformation or revolution.

I think that it’s also possible that America might be past the point of no return. It is possible that there is no saving the system in the US as it currently stands. If this is the case, then the opportunity has been presented to start afresh and rebuild a once great nation. The nation that the founding fathers of America had envisioned. Of course the reconstruction of a framework based on the ideals of the original constitution and ideas of the founding fathers can only come after the current system is somehow replaced.

If starting anew is the destiny for the USA, then I’m not sure anyone can predict what form the rebirth of the system will take. One thing that is certain is if the country steers in this direction then the growing pains are yet to be felt by all Americans and the rest of the world as the transition takes place.

I’m hopeful of reformation. I’m hopeful that the majority of voting Americans will snap out of their daze and see what needs to be done and choose the right leader to start the hard road towards a better America. I think there are some interesting years ahead for us all.

Details of Major Telecommunications Outage in Australia

    July 15th, 2008

    Update 12:04, source reveals:

Temporary fix has been completed, service should be now up and start to come online.

Another source also tells me that Optus will need to start rebooting certain infrastructure to restore service and this will take a while, pointing to full service restoration at around 1pm.

    Update 11:24, my source says:

They are laying the temp fibre patching on the ground now,I’ll let you know when links start to restore.
ETR is still 1300 Hours currently.

Looks like a double failure in infrastructure has caused the outage to Northern NSW and all of QLD Optus.
Both of these infrastructure networks were supposed to be the backup for the other, both have had separate failures of different types.

10:43:08 AM, my source inside Optus reveals:

“Break is just outside O4MD (Molendinar CEV) and was
caused by excavators working on a desalination pipeline.
I fear that the lead in cable to Southport POI is also
    damaged.”

10:19:43 AM, my source says a notification was sent out to some customers:

There is currently a Major Optus outage that may be affecting your service.

    Affected Services:
-Data traffic between Sydney and Brisbane.
-Ability to make calls (landline, mobile) between Brisbane and Sydney.

Estimated Time of Repair: 13:00 Hrs

Type of Outage: State Wide Outage.

    Cause:
-Inland fibre path - repeater failure occurred last night - near Stanthorpe.  Equipment dispatched to Brisbane and onsite this morning.
-Fibre path failure on coastal path - failed this morning between Brunswick Heads and Gold Coast. Suspect digging activity.

US senate passes FISA telco spy immunity law, kills 4th amendment.

    July 11th, 2008

“Yesterday, the Senate approved surveillance legislation that grants immunity to telecommunications companies for their role in the administration’s warrantless wiretapping program.”

This law makes legal previously illegal actions of telecommunications companies spying on citizens on behalf of the US government.

Here’s the NY times article on the anti-democracy anti-freedom FISA bill being passed in the US senate (signed by Obama too!):

Conversation overheard in a cafe today…

    July 10th, 2008

Overheard might not be the right word. There was no way to escape this conversation while I was sitting having a coffee in a bookshop cafe and trying to read my book at lunchtime today. The names used are made up.

3 girls talking/bitching about another girl.

“Does she do that with every guy?”
“Yeah! Every Guy! She does it with them all.”
    “Someone needs to tell her.”
“Yeah someone needs to tell her not to do that with EVERY guy.”
“Yeah, where is she from anyway?”

Ebay starts strong-arming and bullying their users into using PayPal

    July 4th, 2008

Even after Ebay has been smacked by the ACCC, they continue to force the PayPal scam on their users.

SMH reports that users suggesting which payment method is “preferred” in an auction listing are having their auction listings removed if the “preferred” method isn’t PayPal. Ebay are citing some policy that says preferring payment methods is a violation of the auction site rules.

Read the Sydney Morning Herald article with the details here:
    http://www.smh.com.au/news/web/ebay-still-forcing-sellers-to-use-paypal/2008/07/04/1214951011001.html

Once again, I will present the list of alternatives:

Maybe there needs to be a central site to organise ebay users for a mass ebay exodus day, listing all the reasons users might choose to leave the site and never use it again? This could utilise a really simple step-by-step howto guide showing how to cancel/close your Ebay account? MAYBE the exodus site could just take your username and password and cancel your account for you by logging in automatically to ebay and hitting the cancel account link? :P
